Mural painting has the ability to breathe life into blank walls, transforming ordinary spaces into relatable art. I’ve been lucky enough to paint three in Swindon; one on the Mechanics Institute hoardings, an Albert Beaney photo for Swindon Paintfest ’24 (thanks to Artsite) and one along Carfax Street. They had to be recognisable and intriguing, bold but “livable with”. The STFC mural in Carfax Street started as a wish to write a book that would dovetail with “A Railway Town Called Swindon” but be a story that reaches the present day; and so Swindon Town football club’s glorious history will soon be brought to light.
My thanks go to Dick Mattick official STFC historian for his immense help, and Gilly Grey for being my sparky superfan ideas guru.
